In 2018, The Reading Center served 720 students!
The Reading Center is the only nonprofit in the region that offers a full array of services for dyslexic students and their families, including effective tutoring and training for teachers and parents. Over the years, we have trained 2,500 adults and educators in the Orton-Gillingham approach and helped 10,000 students improve their reading ability.
We know what we do works, as our annual client rechecks consistently show that 95% of our students make reading gains.
The Reading Center is growing! We are poised to move into a new building in 2019 and provide Orton-Gillingham tutoring to the greatest number of dyslexic students we have served in our almost 70 year history.
Last year, The Reading Center served 720 students across our own programs and community collaborations!
Testing: We tested 110 students age 7 and above, and screened 31 early learners for FREE. We also provided FREE re-checks to our 1:1 tutoring students to measure progress.
Tutoring: Our tutors worked with 189 students 1:1 in almost 9,000 lessons. More than 1/3 of these sessions are being offered online!
Scholarships: Due to the generosity of our supporters, we provided more than $50,000 in scholarships to students and trainees last year.
Training: 48 adults took either our Basic or Advanced Training Course last year - and 8 of them were hired as Reading Center tutors!
We trained almost 50% more adults in 2017 and 2018 over 2016 due to the addition of our Basic Institute class in an online format.
Outreach: We reached almost 5,000 people through our outreach presentations and events throughout Minnesota.
Geographic reach: Since 2011 our students have come from 46 Minnesota counties and 12 states. Since 2007 our trainees have come from 31 Minnesota counties, 30 states, and 3 Canadian provinces.
