Reading Center Results

We know what we do works, as our annual client rechecks consistently show that 95% of our students make reading gains.

Internal data of our students show that our approach to teaching is very effective. Independent evaluation of our services has shown that our students increase their skills at rates that “exceed outstanding gains.”

Once per year, we provide our students with skills rechecks to gauge their progress in our program. Every student starts at a different place; however, recent re-testing data shows that almost 70% of our students make more than one grade level of progress in one year, and more than 10% of our students make more than 3 years of growth in one year!

The hallmark of The Reading Center is our 1:1 tutoring program. Upholding excellence in professional practice, our tutoring program is accredited nationally through the Orton-Gillingham Academy, which recognizes performance, integrity, and quality of the tutoring program.

Students who wish to begin tutoring are first assessed to determine if their primary learning difficulty is dyslexia. (See more information on Testing options). They are then matched with one of our 52 Orton-Gillingham trained tutors based on availability and student need. Each lesson is individually catered to that student's needs by one of our highly skilled tutors. All of our tutors have successfully completed our Basic Orton-Gillingham Training Institute course, a 135-hour graduate level class that includes supervised student practicum.  Most of our tutors have also gone on to complete our Advanced Orton-Gillingham Training Institute course. Two Reading Center tutors are Fellows of the Academy and one is Certified. Our training program is accredited by the Orton-Gillingham Academy.

Most of our students work with a tutor for one hour, 2x per week. As it takes time for significant growth in reading, most students are tutored for at least a year. Some need several years.

As a nonprofit, we try to keep our costs as low as possible to families. We do not want anyone to be turned away due to inability to pay so scholarships and payments plans are available!
