Writing Class

The Reading Center offers a 10 session, weekly Academic Writing Class for students grade 6-8 in the Fall, Spring and Summer.

Does your child struggle with writing while doing schoolwork?  The Reading Center Writing Class provides a small group setting with an Orton-Gillingham trained instructor who will guide your child in strategies designed to strengthen writing skills.  Class includes practice and support in brainstorming, developing cohesive content, and follow through needed to get their ideas on paper when writing and editing paragraphs and essays. 

Writing skills that will be addressed:

  • Brainstorming
  • Outlining
  • Sentence structure
  • Basic paragraph
  • Organizational ideas
  • Grammar
  • Sentence variety
  • Expanded paragraphs
  • Plagiarism

Study Skills Class

The Reading Center offers a 10 session, weekly Study Skills class for 7th - 11th grade students in the Fall, Spring and Summer.

Does your student struggle with disorganization, time management?  Does he or she struggle to know where to start a project or homework?  The Reading Center Study Skills Class provides a small group setting with an Orton-Gillingham trained instructor who will guide your child through understanding how to manage their time, materials and ideas, as well as practice these skills in order to build toward school success.

Students will learn:

•Comprehension strategies       •Concentration

•Test taking                                   •Note taking

•Time management                     •Listening

•Study reading                             •Class participation

•Self-management                      •Learning and memory
